Creative AI

Moderate 6/10

Generate a random Power card each turn via Creative AI, then trigger Storm and Subroutine off every Power played. When it assembles, the engine generates Lightning Orbs and energy continuously. Niche — only viable if Creative AI appears in Act 1 or early Act 2. At A10, the randomness makes this inconsistent compared to Frost Focus; treat it as a secondary option when Creative AI drops early.

PlaystylePower-generation engine with Lightning Orb spam and energy generationUpdated Patch 0.98.1

Creative AI is one of Defect's most chaotic and conditional archetypes — it only exists if Creative AI shows up early enough in your run. When it works, the engine is genuinely exciting: a free Power card every turn that simultaneously channels a Lightning Orb (Storm) and refunds energy (Subroutine), all compounding on top of whatever you play from your hand. When it does not come together, you are left with a 3-cost card that generates random mediocre Powers and nothing else. The tier reflects that inconsistency honestly. The reason to draft toward this archetype is the value ceiling. In a fully assembled trinity — Creative AI generating Powers, Storm converting each to Lightning, Subroutine refunding energy for each Power played — the deck effectively plays two turns at once. Your hand generates its own additional plays each turn, Lightning Orbs accumulate passively, and Tempest converts surplus energy into burst Lightning channels. Multi-enemy encounters that would pressure other Defect builds become trivial when you are channeling 3-4 Lightning Orbs per turn from Power triggers alone. Piloting the archetype requires patience with the random element. Creative AI does not promise useful Powers — it generates from the full Power pool, which includes Powers that are actively poor for this deck. Accept that some turns will generate a weak Power, take the Storm and Subroutine triggers regardless, and play through it. The consistency dip compared to Orb/Focus comes from this randomness: some fights you draw Creative AI early and play three Powers on a single turn; other fights you spend the first three turns setting up the engine while enemies deal uncontested damage. Equilibrium helps manage this by retaining generated Powers across turns when you cannot afford to play them all. The hard rule for this archetype is binary: if Creative AI appears in the first two acts at a card reward or shop, draft toward it aggressively. If it does not appear, abandon the idea entirely and play whichever of Orb/Focus or Claw/Zero-Cost the run has naturally drifted toward. Trying to assemble the engine with Creative AI appearing in Act 3 leaves too little game remaining for the value to materialize. The B-tier rating is precisely this: when it comes together early, it is genuinely A-tier play; when it does not, it simply does not exist.

Build Defining
Creative AIStormSubroutine

The trinity. Creative AI generates a Power each turn. Storm channels a Lightning Orb each time a Power is played. Subroutine refunds 1 energy each time a Power is played. With all three in play, every Creative AI Power becomes a Lightning Orb and an energy refund — the engine sustains itself and generates surplus energy for Tempest or other plays.

Priority Picks

1

Act 1

If Creative AI appears in Act 1, take it immediately and draft toward Storm and Subroutine. If Creative AI does not appear, this archetype is not happening — pivot to Orb/Focus or Claw/Zero-Cost.

Priorities

  1. 1.Creative AI is a must-take if it appears at any card reward
  2. 2.Storm and Subroutine are your next two priorities
  3. 3.Cold Snap and Defragment fill the deck while engine assembles
  4. 4.Avoid overcommitting to 0-cost cards — this build needs energy for Creative AI

Card Picks

Creative AIStormSubroutineDefragment

Key Decisions

Act 1 offers no Creative AI

Do not pursue this archetype — shift to Orb/Focus

Creative AI is not replaceable. The archetype literally does not function without it.

Offered Creative AI vs Defragment in Act 1

Take Creative AI

Defragment is the better card in isolation, but Creative AI is the specific condition required. Take it and find Defragment later.

2

Act 2

Complete the trinity. Find Storm and Subroutine to complement Creative AI. Once all three are in play simultaneously, the engine fires. Begin adding Tempest to convert surplus energy into burst Lightning channels.

Priorities

  1. 1.Storm is mandatory if not already acquired
  2. 2.Subroutine — at least one copy
  3. 3.Tempest greatly amplifies Lightning channeling with surplus energy
  4. 4.Remove non-Power non-engine cards

Card Picks

StormSubroutineTempestDefragment

Key Decisions

Engine is assembled but Tempest has not appeared

Buy Tempest at the shop if it appears

Without Tempest, surplus energy from Subroutine goes unused. Tempest converts that energy into burst Lightning channels, dramatically increasing the engine's damage output.

Offered second Creative AI

Skip — one is enough

Second Creative AI just adds more Powers each turn, but the bottleneck is energy to play them. Redundancy helps but the engine slot is better used elsewhere.

3

Act 3

Polish the engine. Defragment stacks increase Lightning damage. Equilibrium helps manage the flood of Power cards generated each turn. The build's inconsistency is baked in — there will be turns where Creative AI generates redundant or low-value Powers.

Priorities

  1. 1.Second Subroutine if available — double energy refund per Power is excellent
  2. 2.Defragment to increase Lightning Orb damage
  3. 3.Remove all filler to keep deck lean
  4. 4.Accept that some Creative AI outputs will be poor

Card Picks

SubroutineDefragmentEquilibrium

Key Decisions

Creative AI keeps generating useless Powers

Accept it and focus on the Lightning/draw payoffs

You cannot control Creative AI's output. The value is in Storm and Subroutine triggers, not in the specific Power generated.

Should you add Focus cards beyond Defragment?

Biased Cognition is worth it here for Lightning amplification

More Focus means each Storm Lightning Orb deals more damage. Biased Cognition's downside barely matters when the engine generates multiple Powers per turn.

Elite Strategy

Skip Act 1 elites unless your deck is already functional — Creative AI costs 3 energy and you will not have the engine online yet.

Boss Strategy

Act 1 boss: play Creative AI if you have it and 3 energy, then survive. The engine is not yet complete.

Bad RNG Fallback

Bad RNG Fallback

If Creative AI never appears, this archetype cannot function. Play Orb/Focus with whatever Focus cards are available, or pivot to Claw if you have accumulated 0-cost cards. Do not try to approximate Creative AI's value with other cards — nothing else does what it does.

Multiplayer Tips

Critical

Lightning damage from Storm and Tempest is flat — AoE chip but not a carry

Lightning Orb passive damage is flat and proportionally weaker against scaled MP enemy HP. Storm triggering on every Power played generates many Lightning channels, but each Orb deals the same flat damage regardless of enemy HP pool. Tempest burst helps with AoE chip across multiple enemies, but do not expect this to be the team's primary damage source. The real MP value of this build is that Power generation is unaffected by HP scaling — Storm and Subroutine triggers are guaranteed regardless of enemy stats.

Signal your burst turns so teammates can set up Vulnerable on priority targets

When Creative AI generates a strong Power, your next turn will channel multiple Lightning Orbs and may have surplus energy for Tempest. Tell teammates which enemy to apply Vulnerable to before your burst fires so the flat Lightning damage is amplified where it matters most.

Defect's role in multiplayer is DPS via Lightning spam — do not try to tank

Frost Orbs only block for you. In multiplayer, focus entirely on channeling and evoking Lightning Orbs through Storm triggers. Let Ironclad absorb the hits.
